Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!! My first Japanese calligraphy in this year is "Medetai" which means happy or joyous in English. I also drew Tai (red seabream) with pastel.

Tai (red seabream) is considered lucky because it rhymes with "Medetai". Tai is eaten in "Medetai" occasions such as new year, weddings. Tai is also called king of fish in Japan.

Fall Down Seven Times, Stand Up Eight

This is original Japanese calligraphy ''七転八起'' by me.

Japanese proverb ''Shichitenhakki'' means falling down seven times (seven failures), getting up eight times to try again, i.e. life is full of ups and downs.

Japan Typographic Map

Over the Christmas break, I made this Japan typographic map. Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples.

Japan has four main islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. The country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions, with Hokkaido being the northernmost prefecture and Okinawa being the southernmost one.

This typographic map consists of 47 prefectures written in Japanese characters, "kanji" and Tokyo, capital city in Japan, is marked in red pastel. I also drew the ocean with pastel as well.

Prints of this map is now available in my Etsy shop.

Liccagraphy

Hi there, I’m Licca! I was born and raised in Japan. I am currently living in Canada with my husband. This blog is all about Japan from my Japanese calligraphy to Japanese culture, food, etc.

I still remember the day I started learning calligraphy. I was at the age of 5. It was beautiful autumn day and I was on my way back home from a field trip in my kinder garden. I was in a very good mood until my mom took me to this place. My mom goes ‘’ You are going to start learning Japanese calligraphy here’’. I wasn't so happy about the surprise at first... but I took lessons every week for over 10 years since that day. After graduating from university and working as a high school Math teacher, I had an opportunity to go to Canada and teach Japanese culture including calligraphy at local schools. Soon later I met my husband here and decided to immigrate in Canada. I hope you enjoy my blog!!
